Fairie Tale Puppets put on a show!

On Wednesday July 9 at 10:30am, Melissa Glendinning will bring her Fairie Tale Puppets to the library to kick off the children's summer reading program. Melissa is well known in the area for her beautiful hand crafted puppets and the charming shows she presents. We are pleased that she is able to bring her magic to the library for the first program of the Catch the Reading Bug series.
After the puppet show there will be an opportunity for children to sign up to participate in the reading program. The program is free and open to the public. Call the library for more information.

Catch the Reading Bug at your library

The Bremen Library will have a summer reading program with bugs as the theme. The sign up / kick off event will be held July 9 at 10:30 am. Bring in your kids to sign up and have some fun. They will receive logs to track the time spent reading. Younger children can participate too - just track the time spent reading to them. When they sign up the participants will decide how much reading they will do during the summer. They can sign up anytime after July 7th if they can't make it to the kick off event. There will be programs with crafts, and story time for younger children with several special events scheduled.
On Friday July 18th Herring Gut Learning Center will present a program about tidal pools with a touch tank with creatures found in tidal pools for the children to examine. Since Bremen is a coastal town this program will show kids and their parents what to look for as they explore the shores along the ocean.
On Wednesday July 30, author Louise Bernstone will read from her book for children. After the reading there will be a bug safari as the kids go outside and see what insects they find in the grass outside the library.
Louise will return on August 6 with a reading of her newly published book. This will be the wrap up event of the program with certificates and rewards for those who were able to complete the reading they had contracted to do.
For information call the library at 529-5572.

June at the library

The month of May was busy for friends of the Bremen Library as they worked on the annual spring fundraising event -the plants, books and baked goods sale held on May 17th.
June has no big events on the calendar as many of us catch up on gardening, travel, or get prepared for summer visitors. But plans are underway for some fun events in July geared for children. Details are still being worked out but one definite event will be a visit from the Herring Gut Learning Center on Friday July 18. They will present a program about tidal pools, and bring a touch tank with creatures to be found along the shore. This should be fun for everyone.
The library will be closed on Friday July 4 .
The book discussion group is scheduled to meet on Wednesday July 9 to talk about Greg Mortenson's book Three Cups of Tea. This fascinating book tells of his struggles to build schools in the poorest, remotest villages in Pakistan. His goals to provide education for girls as well as the boys in this area have grown as he has encountered other basic needs that his organization can assist with. He has also expanded his work across the border into Afghanistan. His story is relevant, as the news today is filled with the resurgence of the Taliban in that area. It is a good read as well as a book that gives insight into other cultures, an understanding of events in the news, and shows the impact that one individual can have on the lives of others.
